Music tops the Zune HD’s main menu for good reason. More than anything else, the Zune HD 64  is a portable music machine designed for curious fans with large appetites for new music. The audio player supports MP3, AAC, WMA, and WMA Lossless formats, as well as audio book files from Audible or OverDrive.

Like most MP3 players, the music you sync the Zune HD 64 with can be quickly sorted by artist, album, song, genre, and playlist, but the Zune HD’s unique strengths as a music player are revealed once you dig down to a particular artist or song. For example, when you select an artist to play, you’ll get a list of their albums set against a background photo of the musician or band, along with tabs that offer biographical information, additional photos, and a list of related artists (all of which is pulled offline from the Zune software).

If the Zune HD 64GB is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, album listings will show an artist’s entire album catalog and let you preview and download additional songs, or explore the music catalog of similar artists.

Armed with Microsoft’s Zune Pass subscription music plan, you can easily leverage the Zune HD’s similar artist listings and extended album views to explore and download unlimited quantities of music at a flat monthly rate ($14.99 per month).

Without the Zune Pass plan, the Zune HD’s similar artist feature still connects you to Zune Marketplace, but previews are limited to 30 seconds and downloads are sold individually, much like the built-in iTunes store on the iPod Touch.

Forgive any typing errors.

To make a long story short I use my mp3 players at both work and home – so it is important to me to have a beast-like media device that will deliver the entertainment I require to get me through the duldrums of the day.

The mp3 player that my zune HD 64 replaces is an 80 gig ipod classic. I have not used an Ipod touch and have no way of comparing the two.

So far one of the highlights of the Zune HD 64  is it’s great software which allows you to easily create playlists based on many different criteria. For example I pinned a bunch of the 7,400 songs on my ipod and created a ‘favorites’ list in a matter of moments. You can customize your playlists to include certain genres and eras. All very useful and cool. I also used the zune software to rid my computer of many many duplicate song files (some of which went up to 7 duplicates due to my bad file management).

The Zune HD 64 it self has a vibrant screen which is a beautiful thing to behold with ones own eyes. I have read about some mild-dislike in regards to volume adjustment. I have found it to be easy to use. Simple poke the album on the screen and slide your finger up or down from + to – to reduce or increase the volume. Flipping through music is easy – slide from right to left to change album covers and glide from one song to the next. Under the album cover on the now playing screen there is a list of about 3 songs that shows you what is coming up on your playlist (this is very cool but the words are TINY, very very tiny, and somewhat hard to read). The ui is easy to navigate after a few minutes of use, and overall very appealing to look at (the people I work with audibly gasp at how it looks when they see it).

The weight of the Zune HD 64 is light without feeling flimsy or cheap. I have held an ipod touch and it is a bit unwieldy. The zune HD 64 by comparison is comfortable and easy to grip.

It took over 3 hours to upload about 40 gigs worth of music to the zune. These seemed like a long time, but with a library that large it is to be expected.

I gave the Zune HD 64 5 stars because I feel like I’ve spent my money well. This thing is going to be in my pocket at all times.
